Meet the Tans: a Singapore family story about money, time and having enough

Singapore · 2026

Wei Jie and Rachel are forty, give or take. They have a seven-year-old, an HDB flat, and his mother's medical bills to help with. This is the story of the evening they stopped guessing about money.

Meet the Tans.

Wei Jie is 40. Rachel is 39. Chloe is seven. Every month, Wei Jie sends his mother S$600.

Every family starts as a photo like this. Then life starts drawing on it.

Names, a home, the people in it.School fees. Mum's check-ups. The loan on the flat.

Every night, the same list.

None of it is urgent tonight. All of it is coming.

The list, as of tonight

  • School feesunplanned
  • Mum's hospital staysunplanned
  • The HDB loanon autopilot
  • CPF statementunopened
  • Insurancenot sure what's covered
  • Savingssomewhere, probably
  • Investmentsdown again

Nothing on the list is a disaster. The trouble is that none of it has a number next to it, so all of it feels urgent at once.

01 · Dashboard

The whole household on one page. S$734K net worth, but the savings rate is flagged low and retirement shows a large gap.

02 · Cash flow

S$16K comes in each month. With CPF paying the S$1,480 instalment on the flat, about S$4.9K is left over. Their savings rate is 23.8%, below the app's 30% target.

03 · Net worth

Most of the S$1.0M they own is the flat and CPF. Only 5.4% is cash or investments they can reach quickly, below the app's 10% guide.

04 · Retirement

At 63, Wei Jie's investments would reach S$55K against an S$852K target, and run out at about 64.

05 · Retirement

Setting aside S$1,700 a month, out of Wei Jie's S$2.1K surplus, lifts that to S$900K, above the target. With CPF LIFE from 65, the money now lasts to 93.

By the end of the night, they know where they stand, and what to do first.
